What is a TAM SAM SOM market calculator?

Every Go-to-Market decision begins with one question: how big is my market, really? The TAM/SAM/SOM framework answers it in three layers:

  • TAM (Total Addressable Market): the total universe of companies that could buy your product, if the entire world were your potential customer.
  • SAM (Serviceable Available Market): the slice of TAM you can actually serve with your current setup (geography, model, language, ticket).
  • SOM (Serviceable Obtainable Market): the realistic portion of SAM you capture within a defined period (1 year, 3 years).

Our calculator applies this framework on top of a base with every active CNPJ in Brazil, updated monthly. No guessing, no extrapolation from third-party studies. It's real data from the Brazilian IRS.

How it works in practice

  1. Pick the sector (CNAE): search by name or code. You can choose multiple.
  2. Refine by geography: specific states (UFs) and cities.
  3. Filter by size: MEI, ME, EPP, others. Combine multiple.
  4. Advanced tweaks: paid-in capital, company age, tax regime (Simples Nacional), legal form, registration status.
  5. Set the SOM share (1% to 100%): what realistic slice you want to capture.
  6. Done: the dashboard shows TAM, SAM, SOM, top industries, geographic distribution, market health and 10 preview leads.

When to use the calculator

1. Before setting your sales target

If your goal is R$ 10M in sales next year, you need to know: is there a market for that? The calculator shows how many companies you can address with your current model. If SAM is 800 companies and your average ticket is R$ 10K, the mathematical ceiling is R$ 8M. A R$ 10M target is fiction.

2. Before opening a new vertical

Want to attack real-estate agencies in MG (Minas Gerais)? Change the filters to industry code 6810201 + UF MG and see the answer instantly. It costs nothing to test 5 verticals in 10 minutes before investing in outbound on one with no volume.

3. Fundraising or investor pitch

Investors expect a market slide. The calculator generates a 10-page PDF with TAM/SAM/SOM, sector and geographic distribution, ready to drop into your deck. No need to pay for market-research consulting.

4. Annual strategic planning

Use it at year-end to review where the market is growing (and where it's drying up). Compare your current ICP filters against the total universe. If you serve 0.3% of TAM, there's still plenty of room to run.

Methodology: how we calculate each layer

  • TAM = every company that matches your sector and size filters. Absolute count in the Brazilian IRS.
  • SAM = TAM filtered by geography, paid-in capital, age, tax regime and registration status. Applies every additional filter you check.
  • SOM = SAM × slider % (1-100). Steve Blank's model: SOM isn't another set of filters, it's the slice you decide to capture.
  • Preview = sample of 10 real companies from SAM, with masked data (partial CNPJ, partial company name, partner with partial name). Shows data quality without exposing full PII.

What data does the Brazilian IRS provide

Each company in the base has: CNPJ, company name, trade name, primary and secondary industry codes (CNAE), size, tax regime, legal form, paid-in capital, opening date, registration status, full address (ZIP, state, city, neighborhood), phone (when declared), email (when declared), partners (name, partial CPF, qualification, age range).

In the public calculator we show aggregated data (counts, % by dimension). Individual data is available on the OutboundPro platform with validated WhatsApp, verified emails and LinkedIn profiles.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What are TAM, SAM, and SOM?

TAM (Total Addressable Market) is the total universe of companies that could buy your product. SOM (Serviceable Obtainable Market) is the realistic portion of SAM you can capture in a given period.

Yes. 100% free, no signup required to use the tool. To download the PDF report and the Excel spreadsheet, we ask for your business email.

Over 27 million active CNPJs in Brazil. Covers every economic sector, every state and city, every size tier (MEI, ME, EPP, others).
